Throughout this series, I will take you on a tour to show you around our lovely WordPress neighborhood, introducing to you some latest and most popular trends that are taking place at the very moment. In this article, we will start with one of the most vital aspect of WordPress: design, or to be more specific, the design of eCommerce websites. Why do I say it is vital? Well, because design somehow belongs to fashion genre, which is changing all the time! Therefore, what is truly important is to take hold of those changes.
What about eCommerce websites? Why do we need to know about its design trends? For your knowledge, right now there are more than 200 million online shoppers in the U.S, with the eCommerce sales worldwide mounting to approximately $2000 billion in 2016 (according to statista). Both these statistics are estimated to rise dramatically in the coming years. WordPress eCommerce websites, together with their convenience, their advertisement ability, their storing capacity, etc. are becoming more and more popular. This also means that these websites never stops changing for the better, especially its appearance! So, today I will provide you with the 9 most remarkable trends in eCommerce Website Design that are expected to lead the market in 2016.

Animations will never get old, I can assure you. With a rich-in-animations website, you can improve users’ satisfaction by putting some fun in their visit, making their experience more enjoyable and unforgettable. However, you are not advised to put animations everywhere since it can be irritating sometimes. So what animations can you use for your websites? Well, at the moment there are several popular techniques that are used by the majority of designers, but I will only tell you about 6 of them:
Choose carefully and put the animations where you should put, I guarantee you website will become a bomb! (not literally, of course)
For your information, this term is come up with by Google. What is more, it was also Google, the creator, who had a famous quote on this design trend: “Imagery is more than decoration. It’s a powerful tool to help you communicate and differentiate your product. Bold, graphic, and intentional imagery helps to engage the user”. Created and praised this much by the giant search engine, material design definitely is not something to doubt!
With material design, designers have an opportunity to create wonderful interfaces, not to mention the brilliant shadow effect and also the concept of movement, as well as the depth in action. All these features lead to a clear look for the end users, so I believe material design will never get outdated.
Although many people believe material design is a better option compared to flat design, I know for a fact that this so-called flat design is here to stay, not only for 2016 but for many years to come. Although material design makes the website look more realistic, more modern and deeper, flat design also has some considerable features that guarantee its position in the competition:
I know, I know! Before this WordPress Trends article, you have heard some bad reputation of pop-ups involving the accusation that it distracts and annoys users. While that maybe true to some extent, a right pop-up that appears at the right time can turn the table around. Now comes the question: What is a right pop-up? Usually, pop-ups are used to offer discounts with the main purpose of collecting customers’ emails. Another reasonable use of pop-ups is to convince visitors to connect with your social media channels, or to get subscription for your WordPress eCommerce website.
Anyway, be careful with pop-ups and do not overuse it. As I said, it can be distracting and annoying to some customers, and we all know the best choice is not to mess up with any potential purchaser.
Having emerged to the surface not so long ago, but hover effect has already been known and loved by a large part of WordPress community. It works just as its name shows, when you hover your mouse over a given element of the website, all the information the designer put in for that element will magically appear. This navigation element is not only time-saving, but also creates a greater and cleaner look and feel for your website.
In this WordPress Trends article, I also feel like telling you that this hover effect can be accompanied by highlight effect and shadow technique.
You may argue that card-like layouts were never a huge success, but you cannot deny the fact that it plays a significant role in website design, especially for WordPress eCommerce websites. Products pictures that are arranged in such a way are more appealing and clear to the eyes of customers, which obviously will boost sales later! What is more, using card-like layouts is also a plus to responsive websites. Why? Just so you know, the responsive feature is known to work well with card patterns.

Instead of explaining why mobile friendly design is essential, let me give you some statistics: at the moment of speaking, the revenue eCommerce websites get from mobile devices is 40% (according to smartinsingts). And as it is continuously rising, it is expected to peat at 70% in the next few years! Since time is a precious thing, almost everyone is working on their mobile phones screen to save time. If your website is not mobile friendly, your customers will have to experience the annoyance of pinching and zooming. This is not so good for user experience, if not driving them away!
Having said all above, I believe putting this not-so-new feature into this WordPress Trends article is a right thing to do, yes?
CTA, or Call-to-action is a useful technique in all kinds of business, and that includes WordPress eCommerce! If done right, a CTA can attract the attention of the targeted audience and encourage them to click on your link. Buy or not buy your products, these clicks definitely bring traffic to your selling websites. What comprises a CTA? A CTA usually contains such words and phrases as “buy now”, “limited time offer” or “free download”, etc.
Needless to say, this is a great measure for every eCommerce website. It urges the customers to grasp the offer, which means what?
Buying your products is what!
It would be a shortcoming if we forget to mention long scroll in this thread. Long scroll has been a favorite trend for quite a long time, long enough for customers to get accustomed to it already. This measure is often used by websites that sell products by a story-telling approach.
Remember, what matters in long scroll is that your content must be interesting enough to keep customers scrolling for more.

You may realize there are more emerging trends on the market than those I describe in this article. However, I believe these 9 above are the most outstanding eCommerce website design trends I have had a chance to experience.
